Cohen on DNA recombinant technology; Prof. Walter Murray on MINOS optimization software and its various applications; Prof. John M. Chowning on frequency modulation synthesis and Yamaha's use of it in making keyboard synthesizers; Prof. Julius Smith on wave guide synthesis for music synthesizers; Prof. Calvin Quate on the atomic force microscope; Drs. Alan Krensky and Carol Clayberger on their work to develop drugs to increase transplant tolerance; and Katherine Ku, director of the Office of Technology Licensing, on the process of patenting and developing products. Calvin F. Quate earned his degrees in electrical engineering at the University of Utah (B.S., 1944) and Stanford University (Ph.D., 1950). He joined the Stanford faculty in 1961 as professor in the applied physics and electrical engineering departments, serving two terms as chair of the department of applied physics. He was Associate Dean of Humanities and Sciences from 1972-1974 and 1982-1983. In 1988 he received the IEEE's Medal of Honor for the invention of the scanning acoustic microscope. ...

Chowning, John M.

John M. Chowning, professor emeritus of music at Stanford, developed the technique for creating digital sounds in the late 1960s which was patented and then licensed to Yamaha in 1973. He earned his bachelor of music at Wittenberg University in 1959, studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, and earned his Ph.D. at Stanford in 1966.
